Building a Modx LAN site

I would like to build a Modx site with some private information only local accessable.
Some kind of Intranet with private documents and FTP passwords etc.

Can someone point me to the right direction what to use and do?

We have a old PC available, I have never used WAMP, would that be the easiest way to do it?
Or is it possible to use a network harddrive and some software?

I used XAMPP to do one, and give it internal access only, afterall all an intranet is just a webserver within a set ip range.

Hmm I'm not sure to use this, how safe is it. I need to save FTP and e-mail passwords etc.

For development environments this is great but in a production environment it could be fatal.

Here a list of missing security in XAMPP:

The MySQL administrator (root) has no password.
The MySQL daemon is accessible via network.
phpMyAdmin is accessible via network.
The XAMPP demopage is accessible via network.
The default users of Mercury and FileZilla are known.

We locked them down on the machine so only specific IP addresses could access those areas, im not sure how it was done as the IT wiz did it for me

Tbh WAMP would fulfil the same role, as long as you isloate it to the network. all an intranet basically is a website within a network instead of on the internet.

Just treat it like a normal website on a normal webhost (im sure others will disagree but that ws my approach)

I was thinking about modx Revo Cloud but think I will do some WAMP-ing, I rather build in Evo.

THe other thing i was thinking you could do (was thinking this weekend) is you could access control the whole area (which obviously would not circumvent the XAMPP issues you highlighted) but it would add a somewhat extra area of security.

You mean like remote access like VNC (http://www.realvnc.com)? Haven't thought about that but that is certainly an option for access outside the LAN

We are not really in any rush with the LAN project and prolly our trainee will do most of the building.
The big boss needs to agree too, I just came up with the idea to store our files. At home I might try it too.
