Display list of documents from a folder on the server in a resource

Has anybody done this before? I would like to automatically display a list of links to downloadable resources (e.g. .pdf, .xls, .doc) in a specific folder on the server within a resource. In other words, I would create a new resource based on a specific template. This template would have a tv in which I can set which server folder to link to and then the resource would automatically display a list of the files stored in this folder as downloadables.

Is this reasonably straight forward to achieve, pretty complex or unrealistic? Thanks for any tips!

I have done something similar. However, I created static resources within a container, then pulled them in, using getresources.

Hi Carolin - I've used http://rtfm.modx.com/extras/revo/filedownload-r which also allows you to put files below the root too. Nice extra.
