    Hi everyone,

For reasons unbeknownst to me, my contact page is not working all of a sudden...

    It’s located here: www.e-icon.org/contact

I have not worked on this and all of a sudden I’m getting all kinds of code showing.

Please help. This doesn’t look good smiley

Thanks in advance - any help is HIGHLY appreciated...

    Cheers,
    Soren

P.S. I just found out that it is only on my SSL pages (I have 3) which I haven’t touched since there’s no reason to...

Your ISP has disabled PHP on the secure server. I’ve seen this happen on the Hostopia network of ISPs (BlueGenesis, Telus, Bell Canada and lots of other use this).
If you can’t control this yourself, I’d open a priority ticket with them to get it fixed.
You’re right, it doesn’t look good.. but at least there’s no sensitive data in that code.
If you think it’s going to be any length of time before this gets resolved, you can turn that URL (and any others on your secure server) into a 404 response by renaming the .htaccess file in the root directory of your secure server into something else (like x.htaccess or something). Then at least you don’t have to remove any of the MODx stuff set up there.
(This is assuming that your secure site is served out of a different directory than your non-secure site.. if they are served out of the same directory, then I think the only way to temporarily get around the php code being shown would be to make a custom mod to the .htaccess file - checking to see if the URL is for the secure server, and if it is, maybe doing a redirect to a temporary flat HTML file.)

          Hi netProphET

I’m currently on hold with GOdaddy and praying to that they can fix this. To answer your question, the secure pages are hosted in the same dir as the actual site.

          What a Friday...

I know... You are right. And that will change now! The reason for a Godaddy choice was, however, not anything with the price. It’s a partner ship that we (e-icon) has with Godaddy, which makes the situation a tad more spicy, if you know what I mean. But you are right.

Any recommendations? I’ve been told that www.mediatemple.com are superb.

You probably know this already but your contact form seems to be working now. Just tested it out and couldn’t recreate any noticeable errors.

As for GoDaddy being a good server or not.... I agree they aren’t alway the best choice. However I host a number of my clients’ sites on GD servers without any problems. I’m talking static HTML, custom php/MySQL, ZenCart, OsCommerce, MODx, and older versions of X-Cart. The only real performance issues I have ever ran into was when I once tried to run the latest ver. of X-Cart Shopping Cart Software. For some reason the newer version of X-Cart puts much more strain on their MySQL servers than some of the older versions and causes page load times to be unacceptable (15-25 sec per pg). Other than that... I have never once had a single customer complain about anything related to GDs servers. Knowledgeable Tech support is sometimes hit-or-miss, but they are at least very quick to answer the phone and try to help me out. I am usually never on hold for longer than just a few minutes.

I currently do a lot of work on MediaTemple servers, on both their "dedicated virtual" servers and their "grid server". Technically, these are great platforms, but MediaTemple is not without their share of issues, outages etc. http://weblog.mediatemple.net/weblog/feed/ It also seems sometimes like they’re more focused on marketing and being the cool-hosting-company-du-jour for the Silicon Valley illuminati (pouring resources into making sure their account center works on the iPhone, for example) than they are on getting some practical things straight.
I’ve gone through a string of about 15 hosters over the years, that I would have recommended at the drop of a hat, but what I’ve learned is that just because a hosting company is great, even rock solid for long stretches at a time, it doesn’t mean they’re not going to be your worst nightmare the next year. Things change, organizations and business models grow, focus on product and support gives way to profitability...
So all this is to say.. I have no idea! :-p

                  Hi netProphET,

Sigh... I admit I smiled through your email when i read it, ’cause you’re right... They all have their issues, and it all boils down to what are you going to use them for, what are your expectations and - not to say the least - your PERSONAL criteria for a host. It’s a jungle, but I guess it’s very individual given that we have different needs and expectations.

                  Thanks for the input smiley
