I believe that's a function of gmail's servers, a security measure to prevent spoofing and spamming. I know there is a way to configure your gmail account to use a different from address, although it's been a couple of years since I did that, and I forget how it's done.

Correct, if your from address differs from the actual sender the message is typically red-flagged as spam and would rarely reach your recipient. I would set up a no-reply address for the auto-responder so it is evident that the account does not accept replies and state so prominently in the auto-responder.
