MODX version: MODX Revolution 2.2.9-pl (traditional)
Version codename: Revolution
Database type: mysql
Database version: 5.0.77
PHP version: 5.2.11
I recently updated modx to 2.2.9 and I'm not sure if previous versions had the same issue but if I'm working on a tv or chunk and after saving it the modx tree returns to the resources tree and it closes all the folders. If I'm working in the Elements Tree with tv's or chunks it's very annoying to click your way back to Elements -> Template Variables -> Some folder -> tv. Is there a way to stop this from happening? I'm very capable in closing folders myself and I know where my Resource tree is.
Hope this makes sense!

I noticed similar behavior only when doing the "Quick Edit" or "Quick Create" variants. Are you doing regular create/edits? Or the quick alternatives?
I was talking about the regular way. I forgot about the quick way but I checked and this works without the file tree collapsing and going back to the resources part. I know quick edit is an option but it's not possible to edit the 'complete' tv, chunk, etc.

The modx tree does have _saveState() method to remember the node status.
You might want to submit the issue to
http://bugs.modx.com/ so it can be reviewed.

MODx is great, but knowing how to use it well makes it perfect!

Try to turn Off System Settings: clear_cache_refresh_trees or maybe you've to edit refresh() function (that is called every time you save a modElement) to filter your request of not refreshing while saving a chunk or TV (even if I do not recommend it).
Alternatively, you can change the functions save (), update (), remove () of modElement to avoid running $this->modx->cacheManager->refresh() (even if I do not recommend it).

You have to change the message_limit property inside "modx.js". If you take a look into the cache directory there are more than 200 files and MODX wont include the resource tree.
