If it's worth anything, the autodiscover subdomain is typically configured for use by email clients (Outlook, etc). They will check for the address which typically has configuration information.
It shouldn't affect MODX for any reason, granted if your host is configuring it differently it could cause problems if accessed by a browser.
I noticed the Outlook reference when i was hunting on Google for a solution, so assumed it was something to do with that. When i contacted the hosting company they said they couldn't repoduce the error or see it in the address bar? Everyone else could see it but just not them !

Outlook is the main driving force behind the autodiscover, however I believe it's also used by Thunderbird/Postbox along with a few other email clients.
I would be highly concerned if your hosting provider was unfamiliar with that address, if anything they should love it (talk about reducing support calls!). That being said I am unsure how they could miss the problem if everyone else was seeing it. Granted it could be a case of "What's MODX? Do we support it? Whatever, it's a script problem".
In either case the .htaccess redirect is the easiest solution.

I was pleasantly surprised at my first experience with autodiscover and Exchange just a couple of weeks ago as I returned my employer-provided Windows laptop (unfondly referred to as "the Brick"), being assured I could easily use my Macbook for all work-related apps. I simply created a new Mail account, fed it my work email address and password, and it configured itself, including an outgoing SMTP server.
