If you want the span elements, you'll need to use innerTpl and rowTpl to add the span tags to those rows.
My problem has now been resolved. Sottwell put the last piece of the jigsaw in place for me...
I was still having trouble after his last post and he assisted me by going into the MODx manager.
It seems that I did not have cURL available and so he installed wayfinder manually.
I confess to feeling a bit dumb about the whole thing but thanks to everyone.
