    Hi,

I've noticed certain add-ons don't work when MODx is newly installed on a web host prior to being a live site, before an actual domain name is connected to it (for example, ip-address/~username such as on a VPS or on a shared host environment where the url prior to being live may be ip-address/domain.com)

I've tried installing the same add-ons on a live site and they work but trying to install add-ons onto a site using a temporary url means they do not function. I've also tried different versions of revolution (from older versions such as 2.2 up to 2.8) and different versions of the add ons themselves, and checked numerous file path settings but i just cannot get them to work. I've also tried installing these different versions of revolution on completely different hosting environments, suspecting that perhaps there was an issue with the hosting itself but this is not the case.

Does anyone have any experience of this or know what could be the issue here? Is this a normal characteristic of how revolution functions?

Which add-ons do you have in mind?

Some problems are caused by media sources not quite correctly configured for running MODX from a subdirectory. It's a little tricky to get right. Here's a post describing how to do it.

People frequently run across this with phpThumbOf I know. [ed. note: jgrant last edited this post 13 years, 2 months ago.]

Thanks for the reply. Well my first encounter of an add-on not working was gallery. I found many posts describing my same problem but either no answers or what little information there was available, wasn't able to help my situation (there seems to be very limited knowledge of this add-on out there and it's the only way to have a gallery in revolution so it seems). Basically, no thumbnails appear in the manager, no images appear on the front. Just broken links so the images don't show at all.

These are completely fresh installs of revolution traditional, (2.2, 2.8). I'm not really sure what to write here since i don't understand it myself, just the fact that it doesn't work at all. I've exhausted all other avenues.

There were issues with other add-ons such as Search, in that it wouldn't include any content that's inside a resource if that content is pulled into the page via a TV. I simply got round that by not using a TV and placing all the raw content into the resource itself. I might give Evo a try and see if i can make any progress with that as a last try. I can't really spend any more days trying to get the gallery to work in revolution.

jgrant, is there documentation anywhere on how the media source parameters should be set for various MODX configurations, what those parameters do, and how they're handled by various extras? I've had no luck finding any and the info on media sources at rtfm is not much help.

It seems to me that people with media source problems and authors of the extras that cause those problems are largely SOL at this point.

Unfortunately I've never used Gallery, so I can't offer any advice. There are some other gallery add-ons which might be worth trying. It's possible to roll your own using MIGX, but that might be a fair amount of work depending on what features you need.

For search, there's another extra called AdvSearch which does work with TV content.

As far as documentation for properly configuring a media source when MODX is installed in a subdirectory, that post I linked to above is the first time I've seen it explained. The extras which get the blame for not working in such a scenario (I'm thinking of phpThumbOf here) aren't causing the problem; they're simply not robust enough to correct the problem when they're confronted with it.

I agree though, it's frequently a source of headaches for people. I remember being confounded by phpThumbOf not working when accessing a site via a URL like http://somesite.com/~user/ on the first couple MODX sites I built!
