Let's say you create a resource group for admins you would need to place whatever resources you want to be accessible by admins only in this resource group.

Then you go to Security > Access Controls right click on your user group, select update user group and go into the Resource Group Access tab here you specify if this user group will have access to the resources in this resource group.

ACL's are very confusing at first but once you get the hang of it you can do some very powerful stuff with it I have sites where clients never log into the manager and update the site via, manage users and upload files via the front end.

I think I got it working 99% on another site, but now I have another problem - when I log in as the new user with Content Editor rights, I can't see the dropdowns in the image TV's, meaning, I can't choose any images. What's wrong there?

Here is a screenshot of what I get: [ed. note: bblinda74 last edited this post 13 years, 2 months ago.]

By default the Content Editor access policy doesn't have access to TV's or elements so you have 2 options, you can either duplicate the Administrator access policy and disable the features you don't want the user to have or duplicate the Content Editor Policy and add the features you need like access to TV and the capability to edit them.

I would just copy the content editor policy and modify it to your needs so go to Security > Access Controls the click on the Access Policies tab right click on the Content Editor access policy and start enabling check marks for the options you want them to have.

Once you are done with the policy make sure to go back and update the resource group and change the policy for the specific user group, also make sure you have the right context selected.

      Hope this helps, good luck.

I did edit the Content Editor Access Policies, and I enabled edit_tv, but I still get the same problem. I did not, however, create any resource groups for this particular site (I "abandoned" the other site with the messed up ACL's for now to test the ACLs on another site, where I didn't set up any other users as yet). Do I always HAVE to set up resource groups? Because apart from the image TV issue, everything else is exactly the way I want it.

What exactly is your end goal? If you want to have a portion of the site that is only accessible for logged in users then yes you need to have resource groups.

You need to enable view_tv, edit_tv and save_tv if you want the user to be able to have access to the TVs.

All I wanted is for the client not to see the "Elements" tab, and some of the top menu items, and that I already achieved by now (for this site). it's not necessary to hide any resources in this case. I will check if I activated the entries you just mentioned, and hope that I just forgot to tick something. Will report back in a minute --> NOPE, still can't see the image tv drop down sad

If you want to hide the elements tab just make sure the element_tree check box is unchecked as for the top menu items make sure you read each permission and turn on/off the one's you don't want them to have access to.

Ok this is driving me insane now. I just duplicated the Administrator ACL and only unchecked the element_tree entry. I still can't see the image tv drop down! Can it be something to do with the media sources?

UPDATE: I changed back the Media source for that user group, back to Filesystem, and now the image tv dropdown is back. But now, how can I limit the folder access for those users?? [ed. note: bblinda74 last edited this post 13 years, 2 months ago.]

For that you need to create a custom media source more info can be found here.
