Howto: Media Source for client AFTER finishing site?

Can anyone please help me with this: I just finished a site and I want the client to immediately see a specific folder inside the resource browser (for the images he uploads). I am not a "hardcore programmer", but more a "designer/soft-programmer hybrid", so I would really appreciate if someone could guide me through that process. Also, how to set up the system so that the client can only see and edit certain resources? All the tutorials I found sound so difficult/confusing to me........

It sounds confusing because it is confusing. Do you have Bob's book? If not, Bob's Guides is a good place to start, as well as the RTFM, the video within, and all the other tutorials.

The one thing you should do first is set up your "allDocs" resource group, add yourself to this group, and put every resource into it. Then, if you're going to be adding any resources in the future, get Bob's DefaultResourceGroup plugin and configure that to put every new resource into that allDocs group. Then, you can make the new resource group for the editors and selectively add resources to it. Make sure to test the editor users in a separate browser, if you're logged into the site as admin, you'll see all the resources.

Be very careful, as you can lock yourself out of the manager easily. Make sure to add yourself to any resource or user group you make. It's actually a good idea to test this on a completely different MODX site before you implement it on a client's site. So much can go wrong, and then you're stuck with undoing everything just to get it usable.

The media sources RTFM documentation should be enough to set up the media source for the editors, that's the easy part.

Just make sure you give enable the sudo checkbox for your user account in the Manage User options to prevent you from locking yourself out of MODX if you set the permissions wrong.

To test make sure you run another browser or an incognito window with a test user account with the permissions you want to test, MODX ACLS are very frustrating and will drive make you hate MODX if you don't understand how it works but when you do you will love it.

Thanks to Frogabog for recommending my book, but what you really want is information on Media Sources and they didn't exist when I wrote the book. I didn't want you to be disappointed if you bought it (though there are a couple other things in there that you might find useful).

Also, I hate to contradict Frogabog, whose advice is generally fabulous, but the references in the post above are mostly for managing access to Resources and Elements. If I'm understanding you, you want to limit access to physical files, which means Media Sources -- another thing altogether.

If it makes you feel any better, I wrote the Official Guide to MODX, but I'm still a little confused about Media Sources myself.


BTW, once you've set yourself up as a "sudo" user and flushed permissions and settings, it's almost impossible to lock yourself out.

You are right, I am looking for limiting the resource browser folders to the client, because that's one thing I find really confusing in modX, that this is so complicated to manage.
However, I haven't done anything yet, working on other projects and the client is still reviewing the site and sending changes, but one day or the other I'll have to get to it. Not looking forward to. If it happens that I figure it out, I might post a "newbie" tutorial
