ok, so i recently got given the mission of updating the info on my restaurant's site.
i've done a bit of web design before so i tried updating the opening hours in MODx in the managing elements part. as the opening hours are part of the header. now, i dont know what happened, but when it saved, all these \\\' started appearing through the code and now the site doesn't work. the site was uploaded a few years ago and i dont know if i need to update something, or if that even has anything to do with it. all i know is that i have stuffed up and now i dont know what to do! can anybody help?
That sounds like magic_quotes is enabled, I believe you will need to disable it in your php.ini, and perhaps it's best to call your hosting provider and have them help you with this if that sounds like gibberish to you.
Sounds like your hosting has updated the PHP since the site was last modified. In the Manager, go to Reports -> System Info, and click the "view" link for phpinfo. Look for a setting for "magic_quotes_gpc". It should be off.
What is happening is that all of the MODx forms are passed back to the server as POST values. When PHP has magic_quotes_gpc (GET, POST, COOKIE) it will automatically add / before quote marks and some other characters - this is called "escaping" the characters. This is a security measure to prevent bad stuff from being passed from forms to the database or otherwise used in a script. But any well-written PHP application will take care of this, and certainly MODx does, so having PHP do it automatically doubles up on it, causing all kinds of problems.
