I am currently doing some research to find out what the best way is to server different HTML output dependent on if the user is currently on a mobile device or PC/Laptop. I ran into modMobile but is seems to not be further developed. I am not sure if it uses agent sniffing to determine the user's device or not. If so, that may not be the way to go as browsers can lie about who they are.
Does anyone have any tips regarding this issue? I ran into a script and posted it here, but no one commented on it

So may be there is a no brainer way to do this that I am missing or no one has any ideas?

I prefer using "responsive" design, but sometimes it's necessary to have totally different content for phone-sized screens, and using CSS to hide everything still means the user has to download everything, even if he's not going to see it. Depending on the overall design of the site, that may not be feasible.

That is exactly the point. I have older websites that still use flash and we are determining how to make the site responsive on mobile devices while keeping the website as is for the pc / Laptop. That is why a server-side solution would be useful here - to not write the swf object code when we determine that the page is being shown on a mobile device.

I have also seen blogs recommending offering links for the user to choose his own "experience". This could be tied in to the above plugin.
