Answered Packages folder has all versions and transport files - safe to delete old ones?

I just upgraded to 2.2.8 (from 2.2.6), and got a warning from my host that I'm hitting the storage limits on the account (I have other sites there too - using a subfolder to test MODX and get my feet wet.) When I looked at the disk space usage, I found that the /core/packages/ is using 142MB. It still has all of the transport package zip files and each version of the package that I have downloaded and subsequently updated. So, for example, I have in this directory:

codemirror-1.1.0-pl
codemirror-2.0.0-pl
codemirror-2.0.0-rc1
codemirror-2.2.0-pl
codemirror-1.1.0-pl.transport.zip
codemirror-2.0.0-pl.transport.zip
codemirror-2.0.0-rc1.transport.zip
codemirror-2.2.0-pl.transport.zip

...and so on for each package/version.

First question - shouldn't the zip files be deleted automatically after installation, and shouldn't the updated versions delete (or overwrite) the previous versions on update?

Second question - am I safe in manually deleting the old versions and zip files?

Third question - /core/packages/core/ is using 72MB of that 142. Is that number high, or about right? (Just trying to get my head around this.)

All of my package installations have been done through the package manager, not manually, and the /core/ directory is in a non-public file, if that makes a difference.

Zip files are kept so that you can uninstall/re-install, which sometimes needs to be done if files get corrupted.

Old versions are kept so that if something is wrong with the latest version, you can revert to an earlier, working version.

However, you can remove the old versions if you wish. It will just mean that you won't be able to revert to an earlier version.

I'm not sure if Bad Things would happen if you deleted the zip files; I tested Wayfinder, and everything seemed to be working as expected. Trying to uninstall failed, since the zip package didn't exist. The only way to get rid of it was to "remove" altogether.

I'd suggest not removing them unless you also go into PhpMyAdmin and remove them from the modx_transport_packages table. Otherwise, you may get a crapped up error log when you visit Package Manager. I could be wrong.

No kidding! There are lots of things about MODX that I knew but have forgotten, but I'm positive that I never knew that one.

Thanks for all the responses! And especially for the tip on deleting old versions through the Package Manager. It'll help me clean up a little, while still keeping an older version or two just in case.

Concerned me at first that it won't let me remove the most recently installed version this way. I must have to do it through the main Package Management->Packages page. I'll have to play around with that some - do some experimenting.
