With MODX in comparison with Joomla/Wordpress, you have to get out of the thought of "modular" positioning and think in terms of templates and chunks for a majority of the basics. Then learning the inner workings of the mighty [[ brackets ]] calling snippet functions.
I will back up everyone in this post who mentioned MIGX - it's a must-have add-on just like Wayfinder. You'll bang your head a few times trying to learn it but once you do, you have a wealth of excellent jQuery image tools out there that you can make do whatever you want.
My most recent site (which I'm uploading now to my server) is using my own customized version of LayerSlider being called through a MIGX TV. Unlike using a Joomla Component/Module/Plugin, I was able to make it do EXACTLY what I wanted it to while leaving out the excessive (and bloated) code.
I hope I can be of assistance with a few basic things here and there - I'm not much farther ahead of you so maybe I can help you with issues I recently had, or some solutions I worked out using MODX.
