    So a few days ago Google announced the App Engine now supports PHP, has anybody looked into running MODX on their infrastructure?

    I'd be interested to see if its possible to get it setup and running - from what I can see its not a traditional platform with a straight-forward approach; I can't even see any SFTP/SSH access for uploading files to their Cloud Storage environment. They also have Cloud SQL, which seems pretty similar to mySQL but there could be some differences.

    Here's their official overview: https://developers.google.com/appengine/docs/php/ which also includes a tutorial for running WordPress, so that's a good sign that setting up MODX shouldn't be too hard: https://developers.google.com/appengine/articles/wordpress [ed. note: AdamWintle last edited this post 13 years, 5 months ago.]

      DB-wise you're safe. CloudSQL encompases MySQL. There is a demo on YouTube (I've lost the link) of Wordpress running on GAE. I think, however, the difficulty might come with identifying the needs of the .yaml file. I look forward to someone having an answer though!

          I looked into this for the past few days. Step by step I came closer to a working version of MODx at GAE. A local version of MODx is running pretty well on GAE [tested installing, package management, resource management].

          For the deployment I found that the folders are not writeable. That directly impacts the use of core/cache/*, core/config/*, core/components/* assets/* etc. Now the idea behind GAE is to read and write from GAE to GCS (Google Cloud Storage).

          Expert knowledge required;
          So the question is, which folders/parts are written by the system, and can those be moved to another location? So to start:

          • core/cache/*
          • core/config/*
          • core/components/*
          • assets/*

          Can you help me?
            I love flexibility

              Hi Hvoort, it is definitely possible to move directories around in MODx, this is commonly done in the advanced MODx install to strenghten security.

              Check out this this tutorial and see if it can be applied to the GAE scenario.

              Ciao

                The entire core can be moved pretty easily, but moving the assets directory might be an issue. It depends on how whether all references to the assets directory (including all of the ones in extras) use MODX_ASSETS_PATH, MODX_ASSETS_URL, or two System Settings that point to them.

                Installing packages might also be an issue because most of them write to the assets directory.
