Hi MODX devs,
tl;dr: A fully developed complete open source gallery system for MODX Revo needs your help with minor problems and for further development!
Two years ago, Josef Brandl developed and completed a new and exciting gallery system with API and manager backend for MODX Revo. His original plans to sell it commercially did not work out so stopped working on it.
I use this system on a production site for some two years now and it worked really well, my client (expedition photographer) loves it.
Some feature that makes it quite unique:
- Upload via drag and drop from the file manager
- very fast operation, full AJAX, so it needs no reloads
- fast thumbnail caching
- photos are organised in trees, each photo can act as a container for nested sub-galleries and sub-sub-galleries...
- User can define a smaller region for the thumbnail creation
- very compact display of photo tree.
- Works with hundreds of pictures (my client has 850 pictures in use)
- Each picture can get a text description
Here's a video tutorial for the backend usage:

The situation now
Josef has no time to work on GalleryGear and offers no further support. But he has allowed me via email to open-source the system. The code is documented and not minified. It's installable via the MODX-package management (upload to /core/packages and use the "search locally for a package" button) You'll find the Gallery system with backend and the viewer component attached.
The Software should work with any MODX-2.2.x-installation. BUT recently there's a problem: Drag-and-drop-upload stopped working (which is kind of a bummer for a gallery). Josef suspects a change in the drag-and-drop API in recent web browsers. There has been strange behavior before, upload worked only with Chrome, drag-and-drop-reordering inside the gallery works only with firefox (and still does).
This is where you come in:
- If you know how to fix drag-and-drop with recent Chrome, then BANG we all have a complete and working new gallery system – free and open source – for modx.
- At the time there's only one gallery frontend that's nice but not very flexible. For GalleryGear to be true to MODX philosophy we need a frontend that's "templatable" like the original Gallery. If you know how to do that: Welcome!
- Not being a programmer myself, I have no idea how to host the project on githup, etc. It being open source now, feel free to set up a repo for further development. Please announce it here.
