I want to make a modx project for multiple businesses who would all have a similar (one-page) website. However, to make updates go as smoothly as possible and minimize the chance for bugs, I want to use only a single installation of MODX. Is there a way to do this without using parked domains?
I think the domains have to be pointing to the same server.
Or have you looked into MODx Cloud?

So you want to host multiple sites with 1 MODX install?
Easy just create a Context for each site and make sure you use
Context Router to get it all working flawlessly, unless you're talking about something else.
Can also be done without context router if you set up the domains right

Context Router will ensure your plugins work with all contexts when doing it manually you will have issues with some plugins that's why I always recommend it, it will save you the headaches of doing url rewrite rules to get them working for each context not very fun.
