...
But hey I'm rambling here, but this seems to be the thread to do it.
We live in interesting times, and it will be interesting to see how this pans out.
Not sure you're rambling at all and I agree with you.
One of the statements I sometimes make to my prospects is that MODX are the core developers and they have the resources to supplement mine for larger implementations. I formulated this at the time MODX were pressing for me to sub contract them to help their finances and the partnership status was based on how much you spent with MODX.
I sure hope none of my clients and prospects read this thread and discover the total resourcing of MODX is 2 people!
Whilst I've always understood the need for MODX to be funded I always thought the hosting/cloud route was a mistake. Looking at the total cake for an install the hosting slice was the wrong one to pick. I think it's unfair that I make a good living out of MODX installs and the developers get nothing. That's why I made a donation, paid $2,500 when the partnership program was launched and now pay a monthly sub for the partner listing. If MODX had a few essential extras that were chargeable I'd be fine with selling these on, make a bit of margin and pay the balance back to MODX.
I'm slightly concerned this thread is now deviating into a "let's expand into ecommerce". The 2 man resource team is barely sufficient to respond to posts on this thread, let alone develop the CMS. As to branching into ecommerce can everyone please take a reality pill.
Having implemented a Magento site I would dispute the saying "what doesn't kill you makes you stronger".
Ecommerce is huge job to make a decent fist of it. Also bear in mind that MODX seems at least as popular outside the US as inside. As a European the last thing I need is another cart with sales tax and no VAT purely because the developers are over there.
For ecommerce MODX should be looking at great integrations, not re-inventing the wheel.
Returning to funding, if everyone could sign up for the Partner Directory and pay a monthly sub the team might be able to upgrade their used car. (post #60)
