One modx installation and multiple domains on hostgators hosting plan?

Does anyone have experience with this?
I have three domains there and at the moment 1 cms for each domain. Is this possible to handle with just one modx installation on the main domain and the to also handle the sites on the underlying domains? Its not the same site with different name variations, its totally different sites.

Is this possible and if so do you know of a tutorial to set this up or any other ideas?

I suggest you use ContextRouter this will allow you to share all extras and have it work with all contexts which is an issue with multi-context installs when sharing extras and components.

ContextRouter will make your life much easier and all you have to do is create a few context settings in order to get it working.
