I've just taken over the management of a clients website that uses ModX Evolution 1.0.1
Never used ModX before and getting to grips with it quite quickly, surprisingly.

What I would like to know is updating modx1.0.1 to the latest version. Is it straightforward, is there anything I need to look out for, will everything be as compatible etc. etc.

Much appreciate any advice on this, thanks.

There are only two points: backup the entire site, files and database, before you do anything.

There are a couple of snippets that may have changed their parameters over the years; AjaxSearch is one of them. You'll need to adjust the parameters to get them to work again; AjaxSearch does display a message saying exactly what you need to do.

Thanks for the quick reply sottwell.

Just to confirm also. The latest version of ModX Evo. What version of MySql and PHP is required. And, is there an absolute need to update, example security issues? Otherwise can I just keep things running as they are?
From what I can see so far the previous developer of the site has set up SqlBuddy, even though MySql is set up and ready on the server. Or does SqlBuddy come as a requirement with ModX.

Apologies for all the questions but I have never used ModX before.

MODx Evo is pretty forgiving; if you have a reasonably recent version of PHP you should be fine. In your situation, I would create a subdirectory (/newevo/ or something) and make a new installation there to check things out.

As far as SQLBuddy or phpMyAdmin or any other MySQL client, that has nothing to do with MODx and is purely for your convenience in the case of needing to access the database directly for some reason.

You might find this interesting; I've switched to Revo but my old Evo site has been archived here http://sottwell.pogwatch.com/modx-from-the-inside.html
