Get MODX version / Autoupdate

I am working on an autoupdate mechanism for MODX and need to find out, if the installed version is lower than the one available on modx.com. I wanted to use the direkt link, e.g. http://modx.com/download/direct/modx-2.2.6-pl.zip.

How do I guess the correct filename for newer version? Is there any source where I can get this intel from? Like a "latest-traditional.txt" with just has the line "modx-2.2.6-pl" inside?

Could you achieve this by checking the latest stable build on Github through their API and comparing it to settings_version?

Along the lines of this: https://github.com/clexit/github-update-checker
