Inserting HTML into Signup e-mail in the User Configuration

When I am in the manager area and go to Tools-->Configuration-->User and I try to insert html tags into the Signup e-mail, Web Signup e-mail, and Web Reminder Email, when the e-mail gets sent, the html tags are outputted as plain text and are still visible in the email...

Has anyone been able to hack, modify or find a way around this issue?
