Sanatize custom FURLs via Snippet

Hey Guys,
I've using lot of custom generated FURLs in my actual project and use the following two lines, to sanatize them:
```
$translit      = $modx->newObject('modResource');
return str_replace('/','-',$translit->cleanAlias($input));
```
But in the combination with Rowboat and a loop which has to sanatize a big list of urls, my snippet really slows down.

1) Is there a better way to do it? It should work with the same functions like MODX does to sanatize...
2) Or would it be better to use a custom sanatizing-script for that?
3) Or can/should I cache the sanatized URLs with the snippet?
