I believe this is actually taken from the $_SERVER['SERVER_PROTOCOL'], or perhaps $GLOBALS['http_response_code']

No, not there.

I see 404 code in firebug, but not in global arrays. I even see $_SERVER['REDIRECT_STATUS'] containing value 200.

Is there any native modx api way to get that?

I don't think there is any way for PHP to get this prior to version 5.4. And MODx is written in PHP, so it may not be possible.

Somewhere in code of ModX status code is changed, header is sent, and there is no way to know new status code? o__O
