It's usually advised to update your packages before you attempt such a big upgrade. that said, I hope you backed up your previous MODX install and the files just in case things don't improve.
I would try the following things first :
- manually empty the core/cache folder (delete everything in it)
- clear the browser cache
- Login to the manager
If these steps don't work,
[li]upload the new files again (sometimes not all files get uploaded)[/li]
[li]manually empty the cache folder[/li]
[li]rerun the setup script.[/li]

I hope these steps work, because my next suggestion, although effective, is the one I usually try to avoid.
