Switching Whole Sites to Use SMTP

I am looking into switching all mail functions in my ModX websites to use SMTP authentication.

Has anyone done this before? Where do such changes need to be made?

I've done it on a few sites but only for extras. The ones I wrote myself I used a SMTP php library and called the appropriate function. And I used Bob Ray's SPForm for my contact form which has SMTP options (I think)

I didn't change any mail stuff in the core though or the Forgot Manager Login and it's not been an issue as my evo sites don't have lots of users, or users that do any core manager actions.

The only other thing I can think of besides the Forgot Manager Login is the emailing of passwords when a new users is set up which I never do anyway, I always opt for it to screen.

The Forgot Manager Login looks like it would be easily changeable to use an SMTP library though if neccessary.

Not much help i'm afraid, but that's what I've got away with.

maybe I misunderstood the question but what about system settings, section E-Mail-Settings and then set mail_use_smtp to Yes...?

Because it's in "Evo Discussions & Support" and Evo doesn't have that setting.

That would have been a great setting on Evo - perhaps a suggestion for version 1.0.9

I am sure that others have already done such a thing - perhaps they are still active within the community and can suggest how it was done

My question here is which PHP snippets should be changed mainly to effect the mail functions used in the core MODX itself, such as the Forgot Password in the Login Screen and the automatic sending of an e-mail to a Manager User when created?
