If admin logs in to the frontend with the Login snippet, the site does not show up anymore. The backend manager is still normal accessible. Only when we flush all sessions to force log out all users, admin can browse the website again. Same for other users we created.

I spent 3 5 hours trying to figure out access rights for the site context, groups and so on, as I assume that is the issue. But I am lost competely and frustrated with Modx Revo, longing back to the clear Evo approach..

How do I let a front-in editor see the site again? [ed. note: Tom last edited this post 13 years, 8 months ago.]

Revo permissions can be really challenging at first. You might find this video useful (warning: it lasts about an hour): http://modxpo.eu/schedule/sessions/modx-revolution-security-permissions-system. See also the many Revo security pages at the site in my sig.

Assuming that the front-end context is 'web', the User Group of the user logged in to the front end needs a Context Access ACL entry with a context of 'web' and a Policy that includes at least 'load" permission (and a minimum role with a number higher or equal to that of the user's role in the group.

If you also have Resource Group Access ACL entries that affect the resources and have a context of 'web', you also need to give the user's group access to those resources with a Resource Group Access ACL entry with a context of 'web' and the appropriate policy and minimum role.

Thank you Bob, but no, is not working. And again tried several hours and found what does work:

        • Put login page in different context, special "Login context". Site Editor logs in there. If username and password match, they land on broken page of course as they lose access to site after loggin in. (Login snippet parameter &redirectToPrior=`true` also does not work)
        • We then tell user to go to original site... where they can use NewsPublisher in normal fashion
        • We will fiddle with some iframe and jquery to make landing less ugly

Off topic: After more than 6 years using Modx for many sites, with 3 full time developers, we came to the point that we will have a "what CMS to use next" meeting end of this month. The current status (absurd complexity) of the product seems unsuited for normal, average, full time PHP / site developers. Security concerns on Evo stops us to go back, Revo focusses on die-hards only and that is not how we make money. Extra sad as our recent push was because we thought we could move all sites to the Cloud offering, but the end result seems to be the opposite...

Tom, are you specifying the &contexts property in the Login snippet tag? You should be able to log the users in to multiple contexts there if that will help.

This one we have not solved. We ended up developing and installing our own login security / protection. We are just too afraid to touch all the Modx quircks, watching hour long video's an still and breaking things

Looking around on Google and forums: security is a show stopper for Modx Revo. The amount of settings is absurd for 95% of sites.

Our suggestion would be to have:

            1. Security reset button - Clear all security and go to default.
            2. Basic/Advanced Securty Site parameter - If selecting Basic, all we can do is to have a context parameter where we simply can select *one* user group that is allowed to edit pages. No more? Right! No more. Simple and happy for 95% of sites

With this, we might keep quite a few frustrated developers on board on this otherwise fantastic product.

I'm sorry that you didn't get it worked out. I know working with MODX security permissions can be frustrating.

On your ideas -- Number one is a great idea. I've thought of writing an extra for that.

On number two, please don't see me as defending the current Revo security system, but I don't think it's accurate to say that would handle 95% of sites. It would be nice, but people have very different needs.

Here, in my experience, are the most common issues (in order of complexity):

                  1. Developer is the only user -- no security needed

                  Users/Clients who need:

                  2. to have scary parts of the Manager hidden
                  3. full access, but not to all resources
                  4. their actions limited (e.g., can't delete; can edit but not publish; etc.), but can access any resource
                  5. different access levels to different resources
                  6. the features above, but for elements and/or contexts

Not every site needs levels 5 or 6, but a surprising number of sites do. The trick is to accommodate those needs and still have a simple system. It's difficult to create a security architecture that will do both.

Really, what we now have, all our clients, which are not power users for sure, they like (see attached image):

                    1. On every page there is button, if they have the rights...;).
                    2. If Client Editor clicks on it, a modal dialog opens
                    3. ....which they can edit and save. Simple.

They do not like the manager, even stripped down, it is intimidating, slooow....

Yes, they can not do much... just only what they have been assigned to do: Edit Content. And they love it. Ultra quick smiley

                    What we do?

                    1. add/delete/rearrange pages
                    2. add (modify size/resolution!) images
And we like it: to keep in touch with clients - good for business smiley

Have you looked at NewsPublisher? I think it does exactly what you've described. wink
