Like the title says. I was wondering about converting an old site into a modx site.

The problem I might find is that the converted site could run to millions of pages.

So my questions is when is it advisable to stop using a combination of pages and template variables, and instead use custom tables that are accessed through snippets?

Funny there was a question yesterday about this... but millions of pages ? ? ? What’s in there ?

Anyway the subject of MODx document limit has been brought up time and again, and the commonly accepted realistic limit for MODx as it is today is estimated at 5000 documents. The cache and tree are bottlenecks here...

If you want to use MODx you’ll have indeed to go for a custom MySQL table and go for a custom dev...

I run a desperately unsuccessful product and price comparison site, and am starting to do a complete rewrite in MODX, but couldn’t decide whether pages or custom modules were the best way forward. Modules it shall be, then.

shocked. I worked for three years for Dealtime.com (now Shopping.com), so I know exactly what you are trying to do. They started out with Windows servers and paid half a million dollars for a big-time CMS (I forget its name now) which didn’t work well at all. They ended up with Linux servers (in fact, their first explorations of Linux were done on RedHad 6 that I gave the IT guys) and used Perl/Mason. They got a Client of the Year plaque from Oracle for helping find and fix more bugs in that year than any other client. I managed to get them to move from using Access for temporary data manipulation to using the Oracle database. They went from using Excel sheets and having hundreds of people mapping sites to charging the sites for processing feeds that they sent us. Which meant that customers got the prices that we were paid to compare, not what was really out there. They expanded to the UK, then tried to expand into Japan. The Japanese market was much more critical of mapping errors, and they had to give it up. For mapping computer products they had ... me. It was a riot. I used to take stuff from my PC repair shop in once a week for training sessions, and still couldn’t get the rest of the mappers to understand the difference between a CRT "flat screen" and an LCD "flat panel". And a USB hub vs an Ethernet hub? rolleyes
