I’m looking to migrate a sizable web site to MODx. I have a few ideas about how to accomplish this, but I thought it prudent to come here and ask before making assumptions about what to do post migration.
From reading the various docs, it appears that MODx can be installed to a subdirectory instead the root of a web site. This would be desirable in the sense that I could use a single web site to serve the current content while simultaneously hosting a MODx installation to migrate the content to.
The only downside I can forsee post migration is moving MODx to the root of the web site. Is this possible without "breaking" the installation? If so, what exactly is required?
Another obvious solution would be to run two separate sites: one for existing content and one for MODx. The MODx site would then need to be allocated the domain from which the content was migrated from.
I know there must be some precautions and/or caveats that I am not thinking of, most likely due to my inexperience with MODx. If so, please do fill me in, and I am always open to other alternatives. My preference is to keep everything in one site with one domain for the migration.
Best Regards,
Rich
Modx works fine in a subdirectory.
After getting the new site working. You have several options. You could just use a rewrite rule in .htaccess to redirect all traffic to the MODx version and leave everything where it is. You could also do this with a re-direct in index.php (or index.html) in the root. That way you’d still have the old site as a backup.
Alternately, you could delete the old site and move the MODx site to the root.
See this link for information on moving a site. It assumes you are moving from a local site to a remote but the principles are the same.

In theory, you could actually install MODx in the root to begin with to co-exist with your current site. The odds are that the only conflicts would be for .htaccess and php.ini if they are there now and the index.htm(l) file. I wouldn’t recommend this, however because of the potential for confusion and the difficulty of removing the old site.
