    Hi,

Any suggestions on a good search solution free or paid thats out there that can be used to search a site, not just page content but also PDF/documents and will also allow results for different user permissions to be restricted.

    Thanks

AdvSearch will index PDFs using the Zend library: http://rtfm.modx.com/display/ADDON/AdvSearch. Not sure about the permissions based results, but I would think it would honor whatever access permissions you have running.

You might want to consider using static resources for your PDF files, that way you can use TVs for tagging as well as introtext and other fields to allow searching without having to go through all the hassle of implementing a search feature for PDFs. The only way you can search PDFs is to convert them to text files then search the text file. Needless to say, that's a load on the server.

Second that. However, AdvSearch isn't a harsh install and it does in fact do a pretty good job indexing PDFs. Can't take you to the search terms inside the PDF though, that would be a nice touch.

There's a lot of PDFs so the static resources could be a nightmare to implement but am going to investigate.

The PDFs all have meta data so hoping something out there can index the title etc.

Anyone know of some alternatives to say something like http://www.searchblox.com that aren't quiet as expensive. This seems a little over kill.
