    Hi there,

I’m installing, errrr.... trying to install MODx. I’m running Apache 2.2.6, MySQL 4.1.19, and PHP 5.2.4 on Windoze Vista. On the connection page of the install process, when I click on "Test connection", the page I’m sent to has no information whatsoever, no success or failure messages, just blank content wrapped with the install HTML.

When I continue with the installation, the Pre-Install Validation pages looks like this:
    Pre-install validation
Setup has carried out a number of checks to see if everything’s ready to start the setup.
    Checking PHP version: OK!
Checking if sessions are properly configured: OK!
Checking if assets/cache directory exists: OK!
Checking if assets/cache directory is writable: OK!
Checking if assets/cache/siteCache.idx.php file is writable: OK!
Checking if assets/cache/sitePublishing.idx.php file is writable: OK!
Checking if assets/images directory exists: OK!
Checking if assets/images directory is writable: OK!
Checking if assets/export directory exists: OK!
Checking if assets/export directory is writable: OK!
Checking if manager/includes/config.inc.php exists and is writable: OK!
    Creating connection to the database:

And that’s it. Nothing else happens, no errors, nothing.

I’ve tried using both localhost and localhost:3306, I’ve tried letting MODx create a database as well as creating a MODx database, I’ve tried connecting as ’root’ as well as creating a ’modx’ user which has full rights to the fore mentioned MODx database. I’ve also tried all of these steps under MySQL 5.

Does anybody have any ideas about what’s going on?

    Thanks,
    ~eric

I don’t think that you should be sent anywhere when you click the "Test connection" link. The message should just change there on the same page and tell you whether the test succeeded or failed. So that’s odd...

I would guess that you have a general database setup problem on your system. Did you use an XAMP installer or do it from scratch? There’s a lot to be said for those doubleclick and you’re done solutions.

I guess I would try writing a simple PHP page that just connects to the database and get that to work first. This seems more like a server setup issue than a MODx issue in particular. There may be specific issues related to Vista that I’m not aware of, but I doubt that’s a factor.

Is the sql DB on the same server. I had some weird modx bugs when I tried to run a modx site from my localhost which connected to a DB that was not running on my localhost. Lots of weird stuff happened.

Thanks for the replies. I am a stupidhead. After looking through the Apache error log I realized that PHP wasn’t talking to MySQL. At least I know that I haven’t lost my knack for breaking things in new and interesting ways. rolleyes
