probably I'm just not getting it, but is it possible to set a TV for a resource without a template ('empty'). In the DB this resource is set with '0' for 'template'.
Just came to my mind when dealing with a simple display of related resources and haven't found a post regarding this question.
Thanks for any kind of guidance or enlightment.
I'm fairly sure you have to set a template to assign template variables to it. What type of TV is it?
If I ever need to assign TVs to pages which don't need a template, I just create a new, empty template and assign TVs to it, that way it works just like setting a page to "0" (kind of) but you get the correct TVs too.

An example would be if you're using static resources with a custom content type to offer .pdf files for download. You want to use TVs for search and tagging features. The static resources will never be displayed; with the custom content type they'll automatically offer the download dialog, or get opened in your PDF reader. So an empty template that you can assign your static resources to will give the access to the TVs you want.
