There is also the nice resource list type TV available; it works great with MIGx when you want to generate a list of links.

Since only one resource can be active for any given alias (?) it only seems reasonable that a utility which references [[~alias]] should go to the one and only active resource for that alias, and from there we can derive the ~id.

The problem is that multiple resources can have the same alias. With Friendly URLs turned off (the default) you could give every page on your site the same alias if you wanted; there's no check for uniqueness. With it and 'Use Friendly Alias Path' turned on (a common configuration), you can create a site structure like:

      a.com/b.html
      a.com/b/
      a.com/b/b.html
      etc.

All of those resources have the alias 'b'.

There may be ways to accomplish what you're trying to do without referring to a particular resource at all. Like using chunks–which you can reference by name–or getResources (http://rtfm.modx.com/display/ADDON/getResources) to select some resources based on any number of different criteria, or ClientConfig (http://rtfm.modx.com/display/ADDON/ClientConfig) for storing site-wide data.

        Good points @jgrant! I'm learning.
Sue, I'm just getting to a point where I can understand that renderchunk info - I've been recognizing a need for that. Unfortunately it's going to be a while before I can wrap my brain around MIGX/MIGXDB in general.

I believe with the current information I can do what's required. Thanks all!
Loved ModX when I was using it a few years ago. Shifted to WordPress, sorry. Thanks, all.
