Migrating to Revo, getting old URLs to new site

I have my old/existing business site with domain/products/foo.htm and domain/services/bar.htm, etc. I want to replace that site and get everything to map over to my new Revo site. I don't expect the URLs to line up perfectly. I have my resources organized into categories like products/foo and services/bar.

There are always discussions here about details about specific addins, but I'd like opinions on the current best practices for doing a migration like this?
- The best plugin and/or techniques to get /pathX and /pathX/fileY.htm to hit resourceIDx
- To preserve pathX/pathY as categoryX/categoryY where desired?
- To quickly identify and fix missing resource issues.
- To allow multiple vectors into the same resources: /pathX/foo, /foo, /anything/foo, etc.

I know I'll miss some, so I want 404's to be logged and for the user to hit a decent 404 page, not just the home page. Then I'll fix those pages as fast as I can find them.

Ideally, rather than a 404, I'd really like to preserve the old site in a subdomain, and if I don't have a new page setup, I'd like to redirect to the old page in the subdomain. So /products/foo.htm has a resource but /products/bar.htm gets logged and then redirected to sub.mydomain/products/bar.htm. When I fix it, that redirect will no longer happen, until at some point I can trash the old site.

Check out the Redirector and LogPageNotFound packages.

With redrector, you can enter specific urls to 301 redirect to your new urls. The logPageNotFound package will give you a log page listing every 404.

In system settings, set the error page to a custom 404 resource so users won't get the home page.

As an aside, here are yet more addons that have no information about how to use them. We do the install and then hunt around the environment to see what changed, look around for docs, etc. *sigh*

Thanks for that, Bob! With your info, I've created a place on my site to display management reports like the Bot Block Report, Empty Aliases, and Pages Not Found.

I started to go through your site late last week and simply haven't made it through, and I'm overwhelmed with identifying where information is for various addons. I think the more I learn the more I will find it necessary to go back and re-read various resources simply because I couldn't absorb them the first time.

The wiki has the doc for Redirector.

I think I'm good for now as far as sending people where I want and reporting if they go somewhere else. This question is Answered but I left it as a discussion in case someone wants to discuss other options.

I've been told that the MODX guys have modified LogPageNotFound for modx.com to automatically add rewrites to .htaccess. I've meant to do that, but haven't had time. AFAIK, they haven't released it.

Good question. I may not have that quite right. More likely, there's a CMP that lets you set the correct alias or ID and then does the rewrite, though it I were writing it, it would make some guesses first.
