I know with modx that there is usually more than one "right way" to do any specific thing, but I just wanted to ask some of the more experienced modx'ers what the preferable way of integrating this site might be. http://goo.gl/EY4AF

I'm just having a hard time figuring out what the best way to add modx to this site might be since most of the content of the site is image based. I'm worried about how I can best dummy-proof the site to keep the owners of the site from messing up the layout. Look specifically at the "Track Swag" or "Quik Change Track Wear" subpages off of the "Racing" page. How can integrate these images into the content of the site with the way they have to be floated in order to get the layout to come out the way they want it, without the possibility of the site managers screwing things up? I was thinking about using template variables to place each image. Is this the right thing to do considering that the moderators of the site may be adding more images later on? Something else I was considering was to use MIGX, as i've seen it used for image sliders, but I'm not quite sure what the best way to integrate it might be.

While I have someones attention, on a more simple note, when adding an image either in the content field or in a template variable, when the "resource browser" pops up, is there a way to change the default folder location so that I don't have to ask the user to navigate through the site tree to get images from the assets/images folder? I believe this is the correct name of the file browser, but I cannot find it under that name in Bob Ray's book, so maybe I'm confusing it with something else??? I've seen the field in site settings where you can change the base paths and whatnot (referenced here: https://forums.modx.com/thread/46404/how-to-change-the-resource-browser-root-path#dis-post-268307), but I'm still cloudy on whether or not these settings do what I'm trying to accomplish.

Sorry if this post is a little wordy, but it's been a long day. If anyone can help, it would be greatly appreciated. Hope everyone had a great holiday!

Why not creating subresources for each image(product) and using getResources to show the images and links to its detail-page?

default folder location so that I don't have to ask the user to navigate through the site tree to get images from the assets/images folder

      read about mediasources:

and how to assign them to image-TVs:

I'd redesign that site with a responsive grid and make those images on the home page clickable with an image slider, or even just a grid below an interesting slider. The rest would fall into place with TV's for the inner pages images and links to resources filled with content related to those images.

The site owners may consider using (some) text as well. A little 'splaining would work wonders. I came away feeling a little confused.

I'm partial to Foundation and Flexibility (MODX package) for responsive, but you've got a lot of other options as well.

I like that Foundation now supplies numerous base templates, any number of which would work nicely for this kind of site and give you some nice spots to place TV's for the images. Someday I'm going to work hard on working these into MODX and/or Flexibility. http://foundation.zurb.com/

If you install Flexibility into a local or dev site you will see some nice ideas for TV's and global content management, a slider built with MIGX, gallery, and a number of other pre-built elements and resources that are handy to play with and learn a bit.

I completely agree with Frogabog about sliders and responsive design. You might also check out Twitter Bootstrap (there's also a MODX extra to install that).

If the concern is making it so that people can't mess up the layout, use MIGX or Gallery to store the images and put all of the code in templates and/or chunks. Give your users permission to edit resources, but not templates and chunks - that way they can modify existing images and add new ones, but they can't change the way they're displayed.

There's very little on the site that I would actually put in the Content field - maybe the images at the top of some of the subpages you mention, but definitely not the product list type images.

If humanly possible, convince them to convert the text images to real text. Use Google webfonts if you have to. Images should never be used for informational text content like that, it's horrible for SEO, bad accessibility, poor performance, and just generally a bad idea.

I would take the text in these images (e.g. all of the text content at the top of qcmisc.html), put it in the content field as text and fancy it up with CSS and Google webfonts so it looks similar to what they currently have.

All of the rest of the images I would put in Gallery or MIGX and display on sliders.

Whether to use Gallery or MIGX (or both, which I've done in some cases - use Gallery to create albums and then use MIGX to store a list of albums to display on each page, with associated data such as titles and descriptions) basically depends on what interface you want your users to have. Gallery makes it easy to add lots of images via a Custom Manager Page, whereas MIGX puts the images as line items in a grid Template Variable, which you edit right there on the resource.

For this small a number of images, I would probably use MIGX. If you anticipate adding a lot more images (like dozens) to each page, you might go with Gallery. [ed. note: esnyder last edited this post 13 years, 9 months ago.]
