Answered Problems with Template Variables

    I've just started with ModX and haven't successfully used a TV yet. It looks to me like TVs aren't working but I'm sure I'm missing something simple - hoping someone can point it out.

    I have a template called t_product.
    It has a TV called tv_product_name.

    The goal is to create a set of TVs common to all products and then just fill in a product form for each new resource to get a new product page.

    1) Is that the way this is intended to be used?

    I've created a resource, the Title is [[*tv_product_name]]
    I've set all other fields to that value as well, just for starters:
    Long Title
    Description
    Summary
    Menu Title

    The Content is simply: Product page for [[*tv_product_name]]

    The value of the TV for this resource is set to MyProduct.

    2) Since the value of the TV is known for this resource, it would be nice if the tree of resources displayed with this value. But not surprisingly it displays [[*tv_product_name]]. So several resources for different products would all have this same name...

    3) The TV value does not display anywhere. When attempting to view this resource/page, the page name doesn't display in the menu, the content doesn't show the value, and the title doesn't show it either.

    4) Something must have happened to this environment... At some point the Template Variables tab stopped displaying for resources that use the t_product template.

    That's where this stands. I've logged out/in. Closed browsers. Recreated the TV, deleted the original, reassigned to the template, modified and resaved the TV in the template. I toggled the value of the system setting tvs_below_content. I even deleted all resources related to this template and TV.

    That's it, this environment doesn't allow TV values to be set in resources anymore.

    Any ideas?

      If you enabled tvs_below_content, did you check for the new place tvs are displayed at, under the content box? wink

      Tags aren't executed in the tree, and instead of using a TV for something as essential as the name, I wouldjust put that in the pagetitle, and use TVs for things like product price, options, photos etc.

      If you saved a value for the TV you should still be able to see that in the way you set it up now though.

        Hehe - yeah I did. Wasn't there. It's funny that when I put too many details in, I feel like I'm being too verbose. But when I don't put a detail in, sure enough someone is going to ask about it. *sigh*

        Yeah, "should". After a system reboot (thinking something weird was cached) and playing with the environment, I'm still not seeing anything related to TVs anymore outside of the Template Variables nodes in the Elements tree and the tab in the template.

        At this point I don't have a place to enter the TV value, so I can't expect it to display.

        Just to be sure, we are supposed to see a Template Variables tab for a resource which uses a template with TV's, right?

        Since this is not the case, what can I do to help debug this? Obviously some setting is causing this to not work. I'll be happy to help with diagnosis - though I'm not a PHP stud and will need guidance.

          Hmm.. I can't think of any reason why the TVs wouldn't show up in what you're describing, really.

          If you're willing to give me access to the MODX installation (if not, no sweat) I could take a quick look tomorrow to see if there's anything else happening that might cause what you're seeing.

              OK, I poked at this in-depth and found the problem (of course only After I created a new user for Mark and a full description of the details...)

              From TV maintenance Access Permissions: "Select the Resource Groups that this Template Variable belongs to. Only users with access to the Groups selected will be able to modify this TV. If no Groups are selected, all users with access to the Manager will be able to modify the TV."

              I had created a Resource Group called Management and dropped some resources in there. (I'm still learning about security of course and just haven't internalized the ramifications for various settings yet.)

              As a noob, I had checked Management as having access to this TV (Of course I want Managers to have access...). What I didn't realize is that (per the above) this would remove access to this TV for all other resources not specifically assigned to that group.

              Problem is resolved - and I'm a more savvy ModX user for the experience.
