The O’Reilley site ONLamp.com is probably one of the best sources for everything LAMP. I just didn’t mention it since I presumed anyone using Linux would already know about it. My first web server was hand-compiled and installed, on a Slackware 1.0 installed from floppies on a 386SX laptop with 4Mb ram. The linux kernel was also custom compiled. But that was in the "good old days"; I suppose nowadays most people just stick the CD in and install what’s there. Not that anything is wrong with that, but I was always curious about how things worked.

Thanks for the links - you and all the others who have helped. I go back a bit further to writing simple basic on a 1Kb ZX81. I remember when Sinclair brought out the 16K expansion unit, none of us thought we would ever be able to fill it! However, more recently, it has been a case of "stick the disk in". Did you know that Dell have started selling PCs with Ubuntu Linux pre-installed - how the world has changed?

However, I am trying to do what you did all those years ago - learn html/css from first principles and code it all myself. Not a Dreamweaver in sight! I’ll chase up those links - no doubt I’ll be back in short order

Here is where I started six or more years ago. Of course the site has changed a bit, and it was all free for download then, but I still have a fondness for good old Joe!
