Manager url redirects to site url... occasionally. Anyone else see this?

Anyone else seeing the manager url opening the site itself instead of the manager occasionally? Attempting to load the manager login url actually redirects to the site url.

It's occurred on different sites on different servers for me, and sometimes reloading the url again works, sometimes not. Clearing browser cache sometimes fixes it, sometimes not. Sometimes I can get to the login page in another browser, log in and then am able to get to the login page in the non-working browser again. Like it resets itself somehow if I log in.

I haven't paid true attention to how I get the manager login page back because every time I see this I just need to log in and try various methods, which eventually work.

can you keep firebug open and see if you get any 404 errors?

I will try that next time I see it. Is the manager redirected to id 1 for 404? That seems odd...

I think the links are not properly generate and if you don't have a 404 page configured you will get redirected to the home page.

I know that's true for the front end, but seems odd that the manager would also redirect to the front end and not a manager error page. I've never seen anything in the docs or elsewhere that mentions setting up a special error page for the manager, although that in no way means it doesn't exist and I missed it.

For me it happened like this after an upgrade:
1. Some manager files where not accessible so the page was not properly rendered
2. When I clicked a anything in the manager I would get redirected to the 404 page I configured for the frontend.

Could be something else in your case.

I'm fairly sure that at least two sites that I've seen this with have unique error pages configured and thus don't even redirect to id 1.

Problem is, this error is intermittent and I'm not seeing it now. It also clears up rather quickly with the methods I described above.

I have a site that is doing this permanently, and I am desperately trying to figure it out. Any suggestions? maybe it will help determine what is happening intermittently on your sites?

I can't get any of the sites to do it now. Rats...

hmmm...

Any request that isn't found will be redirected to the "error" page. If the server doesn't find the file requested, then it obeys the rewrite directives in the .htaccess (or whatever the web server uses for this if not Apache) and hands the request over to MODx. If MODx doesn't find the resource requested (ID or alias) then it redirects to the "error_page". The only time you would get the system "not found" page would be if the .htaccess had the /manager directory excluded from the rewrite rules.
