First I get this when I test the database connection:
Connection to host: passed... Checking database: failed - could not select database modx!
so I move on. The Pre-install validation checks out to be all okay. Then I press install. I get:
Setup will now attempt to setup the database:
Creating connection to the database: OK!
Selecting database `modx`: Database selection failed...The database does not exist. Setup will attempt to create it.
Creating database `modx`: Database creation failed! - Setup could not create the database!

Setup could not create the database, and no existing database with the same name was found. It is likely that your hosting provider’s security does not allow external scripts to create a database. Please create a database according to your hosting provider’s procedure, and run Setup again.
My hosting provider (aplus.net) does not let me create a database with the name ’modx’ only as my ftp username.I want to fix this.
A new option became available to me (Advanced Upgrade Install)
database name:<my database name>
Table prefix: I don’t know what to put here, so I put mx.
Connection character set: UTF-8 Unicode
Database host: localhost
Database login name: <my db name, its the same as my db name>
Database password: <my db password>
I click test connection, I get: Connection to host: passed... Checking database: passed
I click next untill I get this error:
Checking table prefix `mx`: Failed! - Table prefix does not exist in this database!
Setup couldn’t install into the selected database, as it does not contain existing tables with the prefix you specified to be upgraded. Please choose an existing table prefix, and run Setup again.
I changed the name of the database for a new installation. Everything goes okay, but in the installing results it abruptly stops at "WebSignup: Installed", with no continue or back buttom I can see. Am I done installing? What is the next step?

You need to create the database first, then specify the name you created. Make sure you start fresh, removing the existing database tables, if they were created, and choosing new installation. It’s not clear what installation mode you chose after the initial installation failed, yet provided you with new install options.
