Maybe I've done this totally wrong. I upgraded after the problem described here: https://forums.modx.com/thread?thread=80227#dis-post-442109

I upgraded as described here as a traditional user:
    http://rtfm.modx.com/display/revolution20/Upgrading+MODx

Then I got all they way to modx saying that I meet the requirements and when I pressed install I get:
    Server error
The website encountered an error while retrieving modx/setup/index.php?action=options. It may be down for maintenance or configured incorrectly.
    Here are some suggestions:
    Reload this webpage later.
HTTP Error 500 (Internal Server Error): An unexpected condition was encountered while the server was attempting to fulfill the request.

I checked the public site and its down too, http 500 error.

I panicked and overwrite everything with the 2.2.5 release.
Still the same errors. In the setup I can select language, go to the second page and when I click next there: ERROR.

Please tell me there is a way to fix this?!?!?!?!

First thing I would try is to delete everything in the core cache folder and re upload the files
