"Clone" seems to be a buzzword right now, which makes it hard to locate the correct, no-prob way to clone a Revo site for development/upgrade purposes.

Any documentation available, or is it a case of zipping site > uploading into different folder/space > unzipping site & installing anew?

That is the usual way to "clone" a Revo site. Zip and move the filesystem, dump and import the database. Also a good idea to add the setup folder and run setup in upgrade mode. Some things, paths in the config files for example, may need editing.

However, I have heard that the "vapor" package, intended for importing whole sites into the Cloud, also works with non-Cloud hosted installations. I haven't tried it yet myself. https://modxcloud.com/userguide/how-tos/import-sites-with-vapor.html

I'm on rackspace cloud sites, as of 2.2.4 the vapor cloning worked great.... as of 2.2.6 it seems to be not working correctly.

I hope it starts working again, I did update to vapor 1.0 pl
