It's 3am here and I've now just found time to have a quick look at the replies.

If you two ladies don't mind waiting, I'll have a good look in the morning.

Just quickly, I did try the empty template idea but it kept returning me to the home page when I clicked the menu item, rather than stay where it was.

      Thanks

      Keith

The way Ottogal suggested uses a TV so that you can decide which page/resource will be output into which menu (top or side). It's effective but you also must make sure to tick the radio box for each resource, which is a little more work for the editor/resource creator than just placing the resource under a container.
To make the handling easier, set the default value of the TV "in_menu" to @INHERIT.
So it's just in the top level resources that you need to set the TV value, and if you change it, say, moving it from one menu to the other, the whole subtree of this resource will be moved with it - what is certainly intended anyway.
Being that the resource tree's structure is where Wayfinder looks to get it's structure, overall it's a good idea to organize your site with containers/parents and sub-resources/children.
This is indeed essential for the working of Wayfinder.

If Susan says do both empty template and category, do both. She's far smarter than I am.

I'm gonna have to try that inherit thing. It'll inherit anything I input in a parent? Anything? Woot!

making top level menu items, such as Paintings and Sculpture, non-clickable
You could also think of using the snippet FirstChildRedirect.
              Just put the call
              [[!FirstChildRedirect]]
as only content into the Content area of Paintings. Then the menu item Paintings remains clickable, but a click to it redirects to its first child, Watercolours.

Not really anything - but the value of the TV... ;-)

I use @INHERIT a lot. That way you only need to edit a resource somewhere in the higher levels of the Resource Tree for all of that resource's children to inherit the changed TV value.

Inherit content would be a little overboard methinks. But the TV's, well then things are gonna go a lot faster from now on. Except now I'll overthink it and end up going back on a few sites to redo some things.

Good stuff here, too bad Keith is snoozin'

You would not want to inherit content; that would cause duplicate content which search engines frown on.
