As I have updated my MODX install, each time we get new files for each of the core/packages/core/modSomethings. Unlike most other file structures, they seem to have random alphanumeric names and so the older files don't get overwritten with updated files, just added to.

Should I be deleting all the old files before uploading the newest version or are the old files somehow still being used?

the old files are kept in case of need to fall back to an earlier known good version.

So as long as I have a backup of those files for my current 2.2.4 install, I can delete them when installing 2.2.5?

I'm not sure how that would effect the Package Manager's uninstall/reinstall function. To be honest, I'd be inclined to use Package Manager to totally remove the package, then re-upload and install the latest version.

I am talking about the basic files that come with the MODX install, not packages I added afterwards.

You can remove the core/packages/core/ directory and core/packages/core.transport.zip. However, if you want to re-run setup for any reason, you would need to put those back in place.
