Been using MODx for year now, and still learning. Thank you for this great product, which has made learning fun.
The new project, is for an association which has 40000+ members listed under about 60 categories. Sort of a many-to-many relationship.
Each member gets...
1. Secure access
2. Profile (builds own profile by filling up form fields, which include -- general business information, multi-select business category listing and few images with captions for each.
Finally a powerful search to search by category, state, city and keywords.
Articles and announcements from the association will made available -- some public and some secure.
Wrapping up, it is basically an industry specific business directory where members get a profile and get listed under their respective business categories.

Sounds like a fun project! Good luck!
Sounds massive! I would love to hear about how you choose to solve specific tasks once you get the project going.
Sirlancelot has been doing some directory module using xpdo, I bet that he has some insight on this.. I don’t know if his module will become available for download or not, but I’ll ping him to this thread..

The directory module I’m programming right now is currently tailored to collecting phone information from multiple 3Com NBX phone systems. It would certainly be possible to use the module for other applications, but I only just recently (within the past 4 days) got it into a working state.
The only criteria I see that my module wouldn’t fulfill for you is member access. The directory built using my module is just that: a directory, a list of names and information.
You’ve certainly sparked my interest though with the member access. I might research some methods of better user integration when MODx 0.9.7 comes out.
I plan to release a collection of my own snippets/modules/plugins in the near future, and the directory module will definitely be a part of it.
