Looking into security at the moment and one of the recommendations I have seen mentioned a number of times is to encrypt the database that is used to access the site.

How do you set up encryption for a mysql ModX Revolution database?

Is this something that is handled by Modx, cpanel, mysql phpmyadmin or something else?

Is this worth doing or too much of a headache to deal with?

Encryption can increase security, but by its very nature will most certainly impact the speed of your website. Unless your data is unusually sensitive it's probably not necessary.

By itself, a properly configured database engine is quite secure. And if your site is on shared hosting where you have no control over the database engine setup, then the site should definitely not be dealing with any kind of sensitive data.
