[SOLVED] Frontend displays blank pages after moving to live server - manager working correctly

Hey there,

after moving a local installation of modx to the live server the frontend web pages only show a blank screen (with no content at all) - unlike the manager, which is working correctly.

After checking the modx error log I found an entry for every page request:

(ERROR @ /index.php) Could not retrieve data to cache for resource 1


Well, caching does not seem to be the problem, as caching works for the manager - and to some extend for the frontend as well - so I think it's the "retreive data" part... But then again, all paths are set correctly, database params are set to the new db, the core path in the workspaces table has been updated and I ran setup again (which finished correctly as well).

Any ideas on how to solve this? Thanx in advance for your help!

Modx: Revo 2.2.4-pl
PHP: 5.2.17
mysql: 5.0.91

Check the permission on the cache files and folders.

The cache folder and all of its subdirectories / files permissions are all set to 777. Deleting the cache's folders contents doesn't help either.

Upon page request the following folders are created in the cache directory:

OK, I tried to do a fresh install on the server (wich meets all requirements described here http://rtfm.modx.com/display/revolution20/Server+Requirements), and when I try to run the setup script I get the following errors:

Fatal error: Class 'Smarty' not found in /homepages/.../setup/includes/parser/modinstallsmarty.class.php on line 35

When I look into line 26 of modinstallsmarty.class.php, where the empty file path is returned, it says:



Why is the return value empty? Maybe there's a misconfiguration in php or the hosters setup?

Again, here are the installation params:

Modx: Revo 2.2.4-pl
PHP: 5.2.17
mysql: 5.0.91
memory_limit: 90M

Did you unpack the zip files on the server, or did you FTP them after unpacking locally?

If you used FTP, something may not have transferred properly. Something maybe like the Smarty file that it's looking for... ? If so, re-unpack the files in the file manager, or at the server wherever their extraction script is, and then re-run setup. Clear the cache manually first, of course.

thank you for your answer. FTP'ing should not be the problem. For the original install I zipped all the files first before uploading them to the server.

For the fresh install I did a

wget http://modx.com/download/direct/modx-2.2.4-pl.zip

on the command line, unzipped everything on the server and then renamed the modx folder to point to the right domain path, so the setup files and everything else should be fine (I even did it twice to make sure there's really a problem with the installation itself).

I'm bound to 1&1 as a hoster in this case, so maybe there's something wrong with their (or my) preconfiguration?

I finally found the problem: The unzip module of the host was not working properly, e.g. was partly renaming files and so on (very weird...)

FTP'ing the whole site did the trick (just the other way round as you normally would do it...)
