I'm having an issue setting up MySQL, can connect to the server, but the Charater set and collation fields are blank? when I tried coping and pasting the screen the fields populated as below

Hi, it was an I.E 8 problem. installed firefox and then could see and select options. now installed

Your experience with MODX will be far more pleasant if you always use Firefox or Chrome for manager access. This includes the installer of course. And ask your users to refrain from IE as well.
Chrome extensions can do strange things to MODX as well, so default to uninstalling extensions first, and re-installing one by one to debug if you experience weirdness with Chrome.(There's been some recent reports here, with the same issue, but different extensions seem to be causing it)
It stands to reason that any plugin or add on in any browser could mess with MODX actually. Firefox has proven to be the most stable in my experience.
