does anybody know why basic authentication wouldn’t be working on my modx install. I have enabled the authentication using a .htaccess file. I’ve tested this on a local test server and it works.

But when I put it onto the live server, which is a very similar setup, it constantly takes me to the the 404 page which I have set up in modx. I really don’t understand this, because as I understand it, the main .htaccess file checks if the request file exist before it does anything with.

any help would be really appreciated

MODx has it’s own authentication mechanism. And the main .htaccess with friendly URL rewrite rules implemented will be serving any request which is NOT a physical file or directory on the server; i.e. it checks to make sure the file doesn’t exist before handling it via MODx.
