When I set up new media sources for the images and documents folders on a site, then revoke permissions for editors to see the "filesystem" media source, I expect them to just have the two folders, Images and Documents show up in the Files tab. What happens instead is that, when they access the Files tab, they see the number "1" in the media source popup at the top of the tree with no files under it, and have to select either Images or Documents to see files. Once they select either of these two options, "1" goes away. Why is "1" showing up (which is really the filesystem media source ID)? Anyone else this problem or know a solution?

One other thing is that, when placing an image for example, then clicking the resource browser icon in the insert image dialog box, "1" always shows up at first. Then, when selecting Images for instances, the images folder shows up on the left but no images are displayed until they click the "images" folder icon. People shouldn't have to click twice to see files; selecting the "Images" media type should immediately show the files in that folder. I think you can set the default media source in the System Settings; it is typically set to 1, which is the default Filesystem source, and why the Media Source combos are showing the 1 first (they just don't have access to that data, so the name lookup fails).

Your second issue should be raised as a bug or improvement ticket in our tracker.

Ah, that makes sense! So I changed the default media source to Images, and now that is showing up properly, with no "1" present. However, just after logging in, the Files tab shows "Media" as the folder name, rather than "Images". Switching to Documents shows Documents as the folder name, and switching back to Images shows "images" as the folder name, as it should be! Also, in the resource browser, the images show up immediately, which is great, but the folder name on the left is "Files"! Once again, switching to documents and back to images makes the folder name say "images" properly. So the folder names are a little funky, but this is so much better.
