Very interesting alternative for captcha

Captcha is sometimes a necessary evil to prevent spam to come through your website. As the bots get smarter to crack captcha, the captcha words need to become more obfuscated to stay one step ahead of the bots. But unfortunately that results in annoying visitors who almost need to guess the words with a magnifying glass.

We'll I stumbled upon this very interesting captcha alternative. It's called a "play through". The idea behind it is to complete a simple picture or animation. Like completing a face with nose, mouth and eyes. Or park a car in a parking lot. With your mouse you drag and drop the right object on the right place. This is simple enough for adults and children but almost impossible for bots as they can not distinguish the right object from the wrong objects. At least this will take a lot of time from now for bots being capable of this. The amount of time it takes for a "play through" is the same or even less than it takes to fill in a captcha.

Hm. I would be happier if it were something I could install on my own server. I can just see the panicky emails I would get from clients whose users can't log in if this server is down.

It would be very easy to make a fall back to captcha. But yes If I had the php and javascript coding skills (working on it) I would make a modx package, but first for evolution No seriously, the whole Idea behind this is much more visitor friendly than what has become of the obfuscated captcha lately.

I am going to attempt to implement this is Revo 2.2.4 and (for me) as a Formit hook most likely. If successful and time permitting I might attempt an addon. If anyone else has done this please chime in now and save us some time. [ed. note: harveyev last edited this post 14 years, 1 month ago.]

Indeed, I've given up in disgust on trying to register or post a comment on several sites lately because I just can't see anything in the ReCaptcha images. I refresh the image half a dozen times, still can't get it, and trying to listen to the voice version is even worse. I like the images (cat, dog, cow, ball) or the simple math problems.

I am also really intrigued by this. After my registration for my site opens on Friday, I'll consider doing one for Revo. It is way faster and easier than Captcha

So far I've gotten the samples to run. No great shakes there. Modifying the code for use as a component within Revo and potentially a hook for Formit are the next tasks respectively. The formit hook I'm not so clear on though. I may just hand jam it in the form for now.
